Most frustrating love.
« on: May 28, 2015, 10:47:32 pm »
Women are about the same. So frustrating yet I just can't stop. I have never been one who has to work at very many things to be good. Knapping is another story. Does bifacing just come with time? I waste more stone trying to get a decent start.

Tonnage is key. Get with as many as you can, watch utubes, books etc. perseverance will usually pay off in the end.

There are a bunch of good guys out my way. There is a group that meets monthly for a knap in.

I consider myself still very much a newbie.  My top things:

1.  Break lots of rock.
2.  Platform preparation - abrade.
3.  Hold the preform as loosely as possible in your hand.  Think baby bird.
4.  Follow through with your strike.  All the way through...
5.  Quality rock makes for a faster learning curve.  Get some good stuff.

Always knap like it's going to take everything you've got to make whatever you're working on.  There are NEVER any short cuts.  As soon as you start slacking, the stone will let you know and you'll make gravel.
Any critter tastes good with enough butter on it.

I'm really good at that. And to top it off now my tennis elbow is flaring like a crazed cat. Dang work getting in the way of my personal life.

A situation often overlooked is the grain of the rock.
If the piece flakes like butter in one direction but chatters
and stacks in the other, learn how to deal with that.
Lots of cherts form in bands or layers
Getting higher and harder on the platform helps
 sometimes when thinning.
And of course the (holy grail) PLATFORM.
Make them like you know what you are doing. lol
