Montana bear hunt
« on: April 27, 2015, 09:50:43 am »
I went out Friday evening to still hunt through some green spots near my house. I found this guy in the last spot on my way out. He smelled me and bolted but I dropped him with one shot on the run with my 30-06. No pics from the field because my camera died. He was between 5 and 6 feet and from the looks of the scars on his hide he was a fighter.

I went back to the area with a friend on Saturday and we saw a small bear and found some tracks only a couple of minutes old but no shots were taken.

Very nice.  Is the season over now?  I can't remember when it ends.  Or does it end at the end of April?

Good job! I love bear hunting, but don't care for the meat. I leave them alone now, but would love to go after another.

Black bears can be blonde, cinnamon, and black. The non-black black bears are more common in some places than others.

Stickbender,

The season in Montana runs to June 15th in some units including the one I live in.

Pearl Drums,

I admit I was concerned about the meat quality. This is my first bear. We have had it twice now and it is FANTASTIC! Bears eat green plants for about 4 weeks after hibernation which is probably why this one tastes like grass fed beef only much, much more tender.

Awesome bear Patrick!
I think the meat from a spring bear is great tasting also, fatten em up on greens and they taste good.

Mine was a fall bear. It was greasy, chewy and not very good at all. Ive never ate spring bear. Maybe that's my ticket to go hunt another one up? I do love it.

Chris,
Im just guessin' that spring bears taste better, because both of the bears I got on my Alberta hunt a few years ago were good eating.
