Good Pics. Looked out My backdoor a couple days ago before this cold front came roaring in, and counted 22 Toms having a "Strut-off" - fun to watch. Snuck My into the middle of 5 Toms (bow range) while out looking for Morels last Saturday. My permit starts in about three weeks. Bob

Well yes, I think I understand. Would I be correct to think
it's more like trophy hunting than meat hunting?
I would be right with ya -all if they were tasty or someone
could explain how harvesting the gobblers helps the flock.
Not trying to dampen anyones spirits at all.
I just haven't honestly learned these things.

I would say it is more about the sport and challenge than pure meat hunting but wild turkey meat is the best turkey meat you will eat. Turkey fingers on the grill are wonderful.  You should try the meat.  I don't get caught up much in beard length and spur size. Every turkey is a trophy and beards and spurs are just extras.

Turkey is delicious! I wish we had a season for them here. They're new to the area and their population is growing, so maybe in a few years.

I have eaten and like hens but don't know anyone that eats the toms?
I have never taken one.
Any recipes for them?
I used to live in NJ and there were no bears or turkeys
back in the 50's They reintroduced turkeys in the early 80's or late 70's.
and they are doing very well today.
Bears were protected until just recently when they
became an extreme over population problem.
Thanks for the comments and admiration of these critters.
