Bow hunting, do you bring a gun?
« on: February 13, 2015, 05:03:03 pm »
Not sure if I should be posting this is the hunting section because it's gun related. I'm 31 and have never hunted, but am starting to get my ducks in a row to start next season.
My only interest is bow hunting, but around here there lots of black bears, wolves, and Cougars. Do you guys bring guns for protection from the unexpected, or don't worry about it?

If I was hunting in your area I would be packing a 44 mag. as back up.  In my area the biggest predators are coyotes and bobcats.  Neither are a threat so I don't carry a gun.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

When it is legal to be armed, why would you not be?

because I'm not really into guns.
I'm definitely into protecting myself from being hunted though

It depends on your hunting laws and season, here during archery season it's a no no but that's archery only
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

Up here in Canada we can't carry pistols. Range use only and then with a lot of hoops to jump through.

Of course in Canada, you can't legally carry a handgun doing anything, even hunting. You can only target shoot with a handgun, at a certified range. Most people don't go thru the trouble of jumping thru the necessary hoops to even own one. Also, it's illegal to carry a gun during bow season, unless you're hunting Black Bears. I've never hunted bears, so I don't get to carry a gun during bow season.

If you hunt in bear country pepper spray might be a better option if you are not used to the firearm.
There was a guide on TradGang that said if you carry a pistol in grizzly country file the front site down...so it won't hurt so much when the bear stuffs it up your butt.
We have black bears around here and I've never worried about being in the woods with them.
