Yew sapling bow
« on: January 13, 2015, 11:36:51 am »
I have not really made bows for a while, and I very much enjoyed making this one  ;D

I'm not in the US. Here, there's no legal issue with the feather.

The bow is from a yew sapling, you can still see the pith in the handle. The heartwood is still quite bright, the wood is not very dense. The tips and strikeplate are roebuck antler. String's Dacron. I put on a acrylic finish wich I will never do again, I'm not at all happy with how it looks and feels. The reason I did it in the first place was that I wanted something that will not let the white sapwood go yellow...

Pulls 57# at 28", a bit over 60" long, and 11 ounces mass.

Don't shoot!

Well done! Beautiful bow :)

Only the Overlays could have been done more carefully, they disturb the appereance a bit, in my view  :P

Youre the same Jodocus as on FC, arent you?

Oh sweet.... :)
I love that style of Yew bow, I like having the central pith line showing here and there too.
Great looking bow.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I really do appreciate it.

Del, it's true, leaving a bit of the pith in the handle is nice, gives you the feeling of having gotten the most out of a stave...  ::)

Benedikt: Yes, that's me! I immediately recognized the FC-style of your comment  >:D But really, It was only after glueing them on that I realized I coud not sand on them as on horn bits or they'd get all white...  :P

Man I love that bow!  :)
I sure hope that at some point I will be able to craft a bow like that out of one of the Yew staves I've got drying out upstairs!  Fingers crossed! :D
