Another black locust bow: "Libertatis" 44#@28"

It has been quite some time since i posted something in here.
I've been very busy with school and stuff, so i hadn't really much time for visiting PA.

Fortunately i found some time to present you the latest bow i finished.
The bow was a birthday-present to a good friend of mine, he was really surprised about it :D
In my opinion, you should only give away a bow if you don't want to ;D
It shows to me that it has really turned out great :)


The bow is 61,8" long and has a drawweight of 44#@28".
The overlays are made out of lilac heartwood.
It was finished with a mixture of boiled linseed-oil and walnut-oil.

After all, the bow is really fun to shot :)

Very clean finish work on that, lucky friend you've got!

Have you tried much heat treating? It really cuts down on how much set locust will take.

Never heat-treated my bows, except bending recurves.
I think, with around 1-2" set a bow is much comfortable and accurate to shoot :)

Still a very nice looking bow, something that must have been hard to let go of.

Nice little bow there "B"   I have a few chunks of BL drying,  the grain sure looks a lot like Oak and Hickory, it has that open pore looks to it.

Your full draw pic makes it look like the lower limb bends a heck of a lot more than the upper limb. Is that accurate, or just a trick of lighting? If so, are you comfortable with that?

It looks an awful lot like that's just how it's canted to me, but I could be wrong.

For a 62" long bow drawn to 28" without heat treating the bow has very low set.

The lower limb is bending even less than the upper.
Its just a few inches shorter, what makes it look like its bending more because of the closer radius.

Nice locust bow, Benedikt.  I've always had bad luck with locust. It always wants to fret on me...until I started heat treating the belly.
 A little set(1" to 3")does make a bow shoot smoother to me also. If you know the trajectory of your arrows that set won't hurt anything.  ;)
