Kid's hickory recurve
« on: December 26, 2014, 10:22:00 pm »
After we exploded a maple bow at thanksgiving that was almost finished, I had to work hard to get this one done by Christmas.  It is a hickory board bow, 49 inches knock-to-knock, and draws a whopping 15# @ 16".  We backed it with rawhide and "cottonback" snake skins.  Dyed with leather dye and sealed with tung oil.  The tips are rosewood, I think.

. . .and the money shots.  We had lots of fun doing this project together, and can't wait for the weather to clear up so we can try it out.

He is pretty hooked I would say.  He is already talking about osage and tillering and the merits of rosewood over purple heat overlays (purple heart is prettier, but too hard to work with).

1st two pics would warm any bowyer's (or dad's, or gandpa's, or uncle's, or ANYONE's) heart!
... alone in distant woods or fields, in unpretending sproutlands or pastures tracked by rabbits, even in a bleak and, to most, cheerless day .... .  I suppose that this value, in my case, is equivalent to what others get by churchgoing & prayer.  Hank Thoreau, 1857

Kool! Looks like he really likes it judging by that smile. Nice job!
Did the Native Americans think about all this that much or just do it?

Thanks for the kind words all.  The only thing I am not happy with, is there is some twist in the top limb when it is braced and drawn that is not there unbraced.  I had another hickory board bow do this to me too, even though the thicknesses seem even, and shouldn't be creating a strong and weak side.  does being quarter-sawn have anything to do with that? Nothing I did on either this bow or the other one with the same problem seemed to have much effect.

Very nice Jeff... he looks like a happy kid. How old is he?
My first girl is 7 years old and my second son is 5.... is it too early to make them a bow?
They sure want one....
