Bamboo bow?
« on: October 11, 2014, 07:53:54 am »
Has anyone ever made a whole bow out of bamboo? I saw a picture of one made of green bamboo that had a really low draw weight. I was thinking 35-40 lbs for a hay bale puncher. I might bop a possum or coon, but mostly just a plinker.

I can think of 3 ways to do this. One is to bundle several thin bamboo canes together, arranging them to form a taper and wrapping something around them to hold it together. Next option is to take one boo backing strip, cut it to a pyramid bow profile and shoot it. Finally is the best and herdest. Take two backing strips and taper the thickness from the back side. Glue these together, possibly adding a handle riser between them.
Do some searches for boo backed boo here and on trad gang.

You can make a bundle bow, not real efficient, if you use a single boo backer use the.node side as the belly, over on tradgang a long time back dutchwarbow made a few all boo and boo back and belly bows, he did nice work

I have seen Bhutanese bows with limbs just a split of the boo pipe. They used the split inside out, the inside of the pipe makes the back of the limb.

I'm always thinking on an all boo, using a slat as back an a slat as belly, having a crown on back and belly. Not sure about tillering, maybe only at the sides?
