Hide/sinew Glue

A while I made some hide glue from dog bone rawhide. I turned out beautifully clear, like butterscotch candy. I made some the other day from sinew scraps and knee joints and stuff. It gelled really well and in all respects looked great except it was cloudy. Does the cloudiness affect the quality of the glue? If so is there a way to clarify it?

I went to a local butcher to get beef sinew. They were tossing the sinew in a bucket. I guess they got tired of separating sinew from bones so they threw in a bunch of knee/ankle joints with sinew attached. After I separated the sinew I thought I would make glue from the leftovers. Like I said, it gelled real well but was cloudy. I wasn't sure it would make good glue so I made French Onion soup with it. Good soup!

I've made a lot of glue from sinew. I haven't done any comparative testing on it, but it holds well. I have sinew backed many, many bows with it and never had a problem. Curtis

I've made a few batches of sinew glue and it was a clear amber color after I strained it.

Some fabric that was on the flat part of a bed skirt.  It is pretty fine and doesn't let any solids pass through.

 Do a strength test and compare it with the clear glue.   I've not made hide glue but the commercial stuff I use is never crystal clear.

I'll do that. If I glue couple of pieces of wood together how long should I let it dry before testing it ?

add glue to both pieces of wood and let that dry then glue them together.   I'd give it at least a few days in a dry climate. Longer id humid.

Well, so much for that. I can't find my nice clear glue. Must have used it or something. Maybe I'm just old ???

I strain mine too, sometimes with cheese cloth. Mine is always a little cloudy.  CC

A coffee filter works well for removing finer particles.

Do you strain it as soon as you take the hide/sinew out or wait until it thickens a bit?
