Cabin on the cheap
« on: September 18, 2014, 12:06:51 pm »
This will be an epic build along. My wife and I have a small farm that we own debt free. That being said we are building a small cabin/home without debt. The current plan is for 400sqft. All the wood with the exceptions of a few boards have been salvaged from old buildings. Bear with me guys this may take awhile.

Clearing the land and hauling in materials was labor intensive and we had to be creative. Atvs and trailers were used a lot. The joist came out of an old grain storage facility. They are pine with very tight growth rings.

I took down a building that was a fishing camp my grandparents owned years ago for studs and T&G.

Slow going , this has been over a few months as you can tell. The thing with salvage is gleaning and cleaning materials. The windows are double pane vinyl windows that came out of a Mcmansion in town for free when the homeowner wife wanted new ones.

very nice! I could live in a cabin like that and run my house like a workshop/museum!

The loft flooring is T&G pine from 1940s. The sub floor on the main level is 1" oak from a home built in late 1800s.

Wonderful project! I am glad you live in an area where "the authorities" are sympathetic to this sort of creative recycling.

Your structure may be a bit small in footprint, but calling it a "cabin" is understatement.  Gonna be very very nice, me thinks.
