Sinew Backed Juniper
« on: June 26, 2014, 02:23:09 am »
I got this stave from Carson a while back, mountain Juniper, and it was mostly sapwood.
I got the limbs bending about 6 inches, flipped the tips slightly, reverse braced to 6", and laid
down one heavy layer of sinew. I had just started making bows at the time, and kinda rushed this part.
I recently tried to add some more sinew to make it look better, but it was probably a bad idea because
one limb ended up having more sinew than the other.
I reeeeeaaaaally struggled with the tiller.I just couldnt get the one heavily sinewed tips to come around like
the other one, so I'm not 100% satisfied with it, but am still stoked to have a sinewed bow.
I had heard juniper and sinew made an elastic band of a bow, and its true.
46# @ 25"
54" ttt
cherry bark grip, paduak tips
bow #8 for me. I promise I'll stop numbering them when im over 100 ;)

The tiller looks a little 'funky' but good job  ;)
If you ever get some more juniper then try to get heartwood it can take way more compression than the sapwood.

Thanks guys.
Mike- I bought the stave online, so I geuss you get what you get.
I didnt want to mess the tiller even more and end up with a 20#
sinewed bow, im already onto my next ERC sinewed short bow.
pappy - it shoots great! Really zippy. At about 40 yards the trajectory is
            straight.

Looks like you're having fun and learning that's all that matters!  I dig the look of it, as Pappy said it is a pretty wood...Juniper is my list of must do bows.

So the magic number is 100?  >:D I got a ways to go as i'm a few behind you yet!

Can't wait to see the ERC!

Pretty bow and I bet it is zippy. Do the knots go throgh to the back? Is the total weight very much in the hand?
Thanks for posting it.

If you ask Carson for a more heartwood stave he would provide you with one.

Bryce - I ordered 2 staves from him. All I asked for was juniper and he showed me many photos. He was very helpful and I have no complaints!
Both were beautiful staves, both made shootable bows.
No constructive criticism on this one? I value your opinion, good or bad.
I know the sinew job is ugly though haha
Marco - I'll weigh it tonight. Juniper seems to be very light, and its ny shortest bow yet

And ya, the knots went through to the back, but they seemed solid. The other stave I had to dig them out and fill

Ryan, That is a sweet bow.  Looks zippy.  That sinew job looks pretty good to me.

Glad those staves made bows for you.  Just a friendly reminder, there were two staves in the lot that had lots of heartwood, but you selected two others.  You get what you choose  ;)

Judging by your pics, the sapwood is working with sinew quite nicely.  That unbraced profile looks nice.

No sooner did the soft, sweet note of the bow-string charm the ear of genius than music was born, and from music came poetry and painting and..." Maurice Thompso

Marco - it weighs just under a pound at 15.80 oz.

Carson - thanks again for the staves, the unbraced profile is probably why i posted it. Thanks to the sinew, its my first bow thats held relex.
For the record, I havent said anything negative about the staves, or the sapwood content! i just mentioned it was mostly sapwood,
sapwood under compression seems fine to me!

Very nice bow WG, keep 'em coming. I enjoy seeing your bows, no two are alike but all are nicely made and all of them
have a cool style about them.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Thats a really pretty bow you got there! I'm not one to judge how well executed your design is, but I like the design itself a lot, definitely seems zippy too!
