character Osage build a long. maybe, kinda, sorta

My friend Wayne gave me this....ummm.....stave last Wednesday.  As you can see, she poses a challenge or two.  I was just sitting around the truckstop this weekend and decided to see what the old girl had to offer.  Here's the stave.  Josh

Without studying the stave as I should have, I went straight to chasing a ring.  I found a little surprise a couple rings down.  Had I looked the stave over, it would not have been such a surprise.

I went to rippin' with the draw knife and got below that mess and all the borer holes and eyeballed in my front profile.  There's a dark spot a few inches from the end I'm holding that was the bottom of a borer hole.  I hope its sound there.  With all the rotten stuff on the belly, I'm running out of wood.  Here's the roughed in back, belly and sides.  You can see that I have some heat gun work to do as it has about 40 degrees of prop twist.  Notice the remnants of the rotten material on the belly pic.

I've heard of challenges before but dang Josh, you just a glutton for punishment  >:D  I gaurantee if there's a bow in there you damned-sure will find it. You can make a bow out of anything.

Now after removing all the  trash, I'm left with a smidgen over 3/4" width at the handle.  Normally that would be enough on Osage this old.  However, the old girl had to throw me another curve ball.  Right in the worst possible spot, dead center end to end, checks that run right to the side.  I superglued em all and should remove most of it.  There will be some remaining though.  Any bets on whether or not this will make 50#@28"?  Its 62" long BTW.  Josh

That doesn't look like any big challenge. >:D >:D >:D
 You should hook up with Howard, H. Rhodes, the two of you could take notes on who could pick the most unlikely osage stave to get a bow from. He'll know what I'm talking about.
 Still I'm not betting against you on making that one work Josh. :)
