bid dude with a long draw
« on: April 30, 2014, 12:21:07 pm »
Got a buddy who wants a longbow, he's huge...6'5" with a 31" draw. He shoots a Grizzly recurve but wants to give primative a go. So. I'm thinking 72" NTN with a 9" riser/2" fades. Ive got a killer white oak board that's screaming to be a bow,  so I'll use that. I want to get 60 out of it...doable?

That should be doable, make sure it is wide enough and give it a nice round tiller using all of the limb.

yeah definitely doable, I'd go 2" wide at the fades and a straight taper to 1/2" tips to start, make a nice smooth transition at the fades to limb too, no straight lines and nice soft edges

Does he want a longbow or a bow that is long? There is no reason to go more that 1 3/8 wide if the whole bow is essentially going to be working.

Pat I've built quite a few white oak bows and with a flat bow any narrower than 1 3/4" - 2" they seem to take excessive set, the wider limbs next to none

I thinks he's real happy with his recurve...but I really want to try to make this monster of a man a longbow.
