I'm shaping the tips and in order to get a nice blend and shape from bow to tip it would be nice to sand and shape the back in the last inch or so. Can I get away with that?

You can see the join has an oblong shape because the bow is thicker on one side(arrow). What I would like to do is thin the bow enough so the tip has an even oval shape.

Pre-shape the trailing end of the overlay before gluing it down.
You can work that down without much violation with a chainsaw file working only on the overlay.
