New tent? Need opinions
« on: March 17, 2014, 02:40:34 pm »
I'm thinking about buying this tent. Does anyone have one or have you used one? This one is offered by Sportsman's Guide. Pappy has one from Cabela's that is similar but not the same. This style of tent is new to me so I'd like to here the positives and negatives.
Well, I can't get the pic to paste but this is a tipi type tent in olive green with a small black rain fly. It  is 10"x10" with a 9" height.
If I can get a pic I will post it.

I am impressed you need a 9" high tent.... :-[

I have seen those tents and have heard they are good. Never stayed in one, but some archery guys set one up every year where we elk hunt.

Those one-poles are easy to set up.  I used to have one in canvas for rendezvous before I went to a wedge tent.  I miss the easy set-up!

Thanks for the input guys. Pearlie and I made a deal for the one in the pic.   8) I'll give it a test drive at the Classic.

Pat,
I have one of the SG tipi tents and it has been a great tent for the last 5 years, Actually lived in it for 5 months last summer. Have used it in the Pacific Northwest for an Elk camp, In Southern Oregon for Elk also. Very durable and sturdy. Easy to pack in and set up. For the price it was a worthy investment, and am thinking of buying another for a spare. The wife and I will be camping all over Wisconsin and Illinois this summer with the tent again this summer. She is a Wetlands Biologist and we will be marking wetlands through the central corridor of those two States. Great tent and I cannot recommend it enough....Cheers, Rev, Pete

I agree Mohawk13, I have the 12x12 version of that tent from sportsman's guide. I love my tent, we have spent some pretty questionable nights in it down at the lake. Had tornado warnings and even some 80mph burst of wind and it held up nicely with no damage or leaks. I did use all the tie downs. Also if you get it I would set it up in your yard in the sun, take a garden hose and spray the heck out of it inside and out, this will open all the pores. Then let it dry really good, have plenty of camp dry, and after its dried spray the inside but not the windows. Then let it dry, then spray the entire outside with two coats of your camp dry. It's a little time consuming and expensive but I have done this for years to all of our scout tents and those tents and my personal ones have never leaked!  We have been in some pretty bad down pours and the snow too.

I would get your tent they are well worth it! Just my 2 cents!
