Bow Backing material??
« on: March 07, 2014, 03:39:55 pm »
Found this in the free bin at the second hand store.
It feels and looks like very thin cardboard or thick brown and slightly wrinkled paper. It is tough and I can barely get it to break when pulling it in tension as it would be on a bow.

What is this and would you use it as backing? I am wanting to try it cause it has a cool texture to it and seems stronger than a brown paper bag  ;D

Thanks, Doobs

I think the crinkly texture would prevent it from having tension on the back. If you could stretch it out first it would probably work fine.

Neat lookin stuff.  Maybe tie it at the handle and stretch it towards the tips.

It peels open and is black inside and is still strong when in one layer.
It flattens out when wet pretty good.
Maybe a tar paper? It has no smell.
I tried gluing a bit to wood yesterday and then peeled off the outer layer and got a mostly black, well adhered cover.

I'm thinkin I could peel it to 1 layer and use that to get a interesting black brown after a light sanding and then shellac over it?

Would paper and TB3 be adequate for covering sinew after dried?

Hey Due Boy, you can cover the sinew with just TBIII. It will seal it just fine but is pretty ugly. Try o find a nice print silk or linen blouse or skirt at GoodWill or other thrift store. Printed paper will work too and not as ugly as just a TBIII coating.
