How far would you drive for osage?
« on: March 04, 2014, 01:28:59 pm »
I have a guy that contacted me recently from ages ago asking me if I still was looking for osage, that I don't even remember contacting. So of course I said "as a matter of fact I am", :). He said he has 100 logs on the ground of osage, and wants to give me some as long as I make him a bow out of some of it. He lives upstate of me and it will be maybe 270 or so miles round trip. The only working vehicle I got right now is a plymouth grand voyager that leaks oil (slowly), either burns or leaks coolant and has random bouts of over heating (hasn't since last summer, still not too keen on what was going on there). Other than that it is a trooper and has made similar trips. I am just debating this though, I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know how it looks. It's been on the ground for two weeks, so I don't know about checking, bugs, etc. I would love some good osage though as I haven't had a chance to go cut none for a while. He says the biggest is 8" diameter, so I think he might have a bunch of smaller diameter bush sized osage for the majority, as he was wanting to give me some "branches", etc.
"The way of heaven is like the bending of a bow-
the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

Can he send pictures(?), if not describe what you look for in a good log and see if what he has matches up. Do you have a pard with a more reliable vehicle? Sounds like a good chance to reconnect and make it more than picking up some logs. ROAD TRIP,HAH! Sounds like it could be made into a good time! Good Luck! I wouldn't drive that far for 8" logs.  They could all be crooked or full of limbs.  I would ask for pictures.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

8 hours for me to my buddy Joe's farm.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Made trips blind across the great state of Texas that didn't yield much of anything.  Call me and tell me you have Osage I can cut and I'll do it again.

If I could drive 300 miles round trip to fill my truck with osage, I'd leave 5 mins ago. Are you kidding? Ride your bike!

30 miles from my house I have all I could ever want. I just have to spend the day helping out around the farm splitting wood or welding things. Not a bad deal if you ask me
