simple hickory self bow
« on: January 01, 2014, 08:52:10 pm »
Hey guys, I don' post very often but I spend a lot of time admiring all the bows you guys post here. Here is a simple hickory self bow I just finished made from a tree I cut from next to my swamp this summer. It is 65" ntn and 49#@28". It took about an inch of set and is very snappy for hickory. I dried it next to my woodstove for a while and heat treated the belly and I think this helped. Its nothing fancy but I have a passion for simple no frills self bows. Gonna take it out rabbit and squirrel hunting sat if it warms up a little.

Love those kind of bows....first few I made I thought they had to be real fancy.....but OH yes, I found out it's not necessary.  I like rabbit and squirrel hunting too.  :)

That's a fine bow.

Nice job on that one Lee. I like the way the colors fade from the heat treating I'm guessing? Or is that a stain job? Tiller looks good too. Simple is always good, but that one looks pretty fancy to me. I like it!
Makin fine firewood, one bow at a time!

Thanks guys! StickMan47 actually that is the stain job. I used black and brown rit dye and sanded the middle to get it to fade from dark to light to dark again. Oh and feel free to critique the tiller, I'm by no means an expert.

Great job. Nice tiller. 48# is something you can shoot all day long then wake up and do it all over again.  I like my bows to be pretty much a similar weight

Nice looking bow - I like the stain technique.  What did you seal it with?
Enjoy the hunt!  Mitch

Nice looking simple bow. Very good tiller.
