Primitive/trad bowfishing reels?
« on: December 26, 2013, 05:11:31 pm »
Has anyone on here made a primitive or traditional bowfishing reel? If so I would love to see some pictures! I want to make one this winter because it just doesn't feel right strapping my plastic bowfishing reel to my self bow. I have a design in my head but would love to see some others if they are out there.

Prairie bowyer has made s few. They are nice!

Do a google image search.   Quite easy to rig up a reel, one guy even used a pop bottle.

It would have to be a 7 oz Coke bottle to be traditional. Am I showing my age? ;D

Here is one I made over 20 years ago. Dang that makes me feel old. :( I turned it on a wood lathe in high school.  It has seen a lot of use and is still in good shape.  You can see the little metal keeper you slip the string on. When you shoot it slips off.

Wow that reel looks nice! I was gonna make mine kind of the shape of a 20 ounce pop bottle but out of wood. Joec123able, I would need a reel for my kind of bow fishing. I'm often in a canoe or boat and those big ol carp can go on quite a run once hit.

Yeah you have to use 6000 pound dacron and a very large reel to handle those buffalo! Especially bulls during the rut! >:D
