Mulberry
« on: December 17, 2013, 06:52:13 pm »
Look what I got today. ;We are getting our fence repaired at the shop and trees cleared and this Mulberry has been growing in the chain link fence for years. I saw the guy with the chain saw this morning and told him how I wanted him to cut it. Check out how big the growth rings are :) Some, almost 2 1/2".

Great tree, but those always seem bitter sweet to me. They produce some great berries and great bows.....:-)

Ooops! Looked at it closer and tape measure in hand. The one I thought was 2.5" is actually 3 rings, the smallest .5". The rest are 1 to 1.5" wide. The log is 12" at the widest point. Still a good'n.

You shouldve been able to tell it was big ringed before cutting it by the diameter and the stage of development of its bark(still not mature),and a feature to look for when cutting some woods.....nuttin like a one ringed bow..lol

Nice catch, Eddie. I've never seen mulberry with that kind of coloration.

Yea, Chris, I've been watching this tree grow for 12 years and we have a long growing season here. But, my two osage trees don't grow worth a darn down here.

Pat; I've talked to Steve about our mulberry. It seems to resemble osage a lot more then the red mulberry that grows up north. I've had people try to give or trade me some from up y'alls way and I don't want it. It seems a light less dense then what grows down here and this is almost as yellow as osage.

I think so. Our office and shop is built on Reclaimed phosphate mining land. All sand tailings with phosphate.
