i been trying the stone i got off ebay and im finding  that its really hard to work and my spalling sucks. i didtry to heattreat about 10 small peaceswith sum river rock i gathered up and well  .got it to hotand ended up with  lots of busted stone but was fun to try  sumdid heat treat but   are  small peaces .

You are doing a fine job!  One thing about heating rocks is that they need to be dry!  It has always amazed me that a rock can have so much water content.  When I heat treat a batch of rocks I am always careful to bring the heat up slowly 50 degrees an hour and bring them back down the same way.  I learned a lesson about knowing what rocks I am try to heat when I tried cooking a bucket full of Knife River only to ruin the whole works.  Was a sad day for me.  Keep up the good work!  Joe

Definatly good job and keep it going!  It will all work out with some dedication!  As mentioned heat treating rock can be an art in itself.  Slow and steady heat,  also if you spall it up ahead of time can help too.  Lastly cool down needs to be slow and steady too,  I learned out the hard way< cold air hit some hot rocks and look out!  Lost some nice spalls!


ps if your getting that texas rock from the guy in Mills county it's pretty tough stuff to learn on, try the Edwards rock from windmillhill its a little easier and knapps well without heat.
