Twisted juniper, sinew and moccasin
« on: September 10, 2013, 11:02:27 pm »
Even with the deflex I know this would be a fun bow to make and shoot. I call it a target bow. 61.5" long, 46# @ 28" it is a smooth easy bow to shoot,. I started making it for someone else a couple years ago. Thats why there is a shelf cut in for a right hander. I have been shooting off the hand since I'm left handed at my 26" draw where it is about 44#. Of corse for something this snaked I let the drawknife do all the work which left it with limbs that are reverse triangles(thick on one edge and narrow on the other, then the opposite on the other limb) Tillering her was a little bit guess work with the kinks and setbacks. In the end it's a good bow.
Utah juniper with 2 layers of elk sinew. Water moccasin skins of light and dark pigment I got from Donnietracker. Water buffalo horn tips, Deer rawhide tips and handle. Sinew soaked in rust for the color. Sealed with two coats of my pitch and turpentine and then 3 coats of tung oil.

Nicely done on the tiller, I really like that handle whoop-dee-do.  Looks like a special weapon...or target bow ;)

Thanks all, and John, I have more juniper like this than I have time to work. Most people that work with other great bow woods don't like juniper. They try and tiller it before sinew and have an explosion. If you want a stave It will cost you the shipping.

Way to take a wonky profile stave and make a killer bow out of it, high level of skill shown there. Real impressive work
Chuck and a super nice bow, love it.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Looking at the pics for the first time is like reading a book, and this one has a great ending. Very cool.
