Winged Elm & plenty of pics.
« on: September 08, 2013, 08:38:33 pm »
Ok here's the winged elm I got at last years classic.61.5"NTN molly about a 60/40 ratio.15.5" working limbs with 11.5"stiff non working levers.Tillered to 29.5"@54# or 51#@28".Pulls nice and even from the get go and smooth.Black highlights of a missouri rat snake and black horn & silk wraps. The lip of a fade ring of one limb lifted just slightly. No crack or anything. That's the reason for the sinew and silk wraps on the fades. It's held up good to over 300 shots so far.Finished tillering in at 17.45 oz.18.25 oz. after horn palm plate, snake skin, wraps,& finish.Unbraces with 5/8" reflex. After 2 hours it settles to 1and1/4".Shoots where I look consistently and is a joy to shoot.

Guess I should mention the handle has a 1/4" deflex to it.It had that from the get go in the stave.I see my sizer cut off some of the tips of my pictures after I rotated them.Bummer.

Yes the tips are about as narrow as I care to make em.3/8" wide. With no grooves on the side buffered fast flight can handle that but I would'nt reccomend it for fiber, rawhide,or gut strings.

Yes Pappy.I see your up and atem already.....LOL.It is the densest elm I've ever fooled with.Close to some hickory around here.I imagine it can take a number of different stressful designs.Takes a heat treatment very well although it lost at least half of it while tillering.Aligning my tips took a couple of afternoons[about three tries per tip] to get close to dead nuts in line.I just could'nt get lucky with this one for some reason.Stubborn for a side ways bend you know.
This is gonna sound silly but I did a recheck on the draw length on my tillering board.[Put a yard stick to it].Seems I've been tillering all of my bows to 29 1/4" to 29 1/2" instead of 28".About the depth of a handle you know. That is'nt a bad practice to do though.Guess that's ok too if they don't blow.....LOL.
