Cutting Hickory

I know you cut Hickory in the winter.
I want to cut ASAP.
I live in North Mississippi, Is nov 1st to soon?
Or after the first frost?? or what?? :-X

I would cut it ASAP or wait till spring so the bark slips easy.  Draw knifeing winter cut hickory bark is the most miserable PITA there is.  Just my .02.  Josh

I agree,  I've cut a bit of hickory and I'd wait until the leaves start coming out and the bark peels right the quarter splits of a log.  The bark curls up like a pipe when the bark dries.  I've heard in the old days they piped water form springs with it  :-\

Cut it now, debark the same day it's cut and slap 2 coats of urathane on it. It will be ready to go next spring to rough out, dry and tiller.
I have cut 3 so far and the bark comes off super easy.

I cut some this year on may 26 here in Georgia; it split very easy and the bark was easy enough that my wife was working on one split as I did the other.

Cut it now.  I got three logs last January.  Took alot of sweat (and blood) to take the bark off.

It is best to get it now and debark. I cut some this winter and it was tedious getting the bark off without messing up the wood. If cut now it will debark really easy. Poly the back and ends and put in a cool place for couple of weeks. Keep it off the ground. If ya rough out dimentions to floor tiller it will dry quick but it will twist as well.  :)
