yew b twisted buildalong
« on: July 06, 2013, 06:15:40 pm »
no, this isnt about Keenan ;D I have this character yew stave that is a sister to the one i built a couple of years ago for a hunting trip with Gordon. the limbs have a twist which goes opposite on each limb, i am hoping that they will "cance each other out" but we shall see. I have cleaned up the sides  of the stave with the bandsaw and marked out where I want to take the wood down to . I will have to be careful so as not to mess up the opposite side since there is a slight twist.

next step is to my trusty stave master to work down some more, because of the humps and bumps I will need to be really careful not to splinter the wood, I start with a small drawknife and then go to a scraper, keeping enough of the line visible. next steps will be with a rasp to avoid the splintering issue. I am planning on making this in a american longbow style with flatter limb profile than a elb.

I started a yew ELB today myself.... not with that character though.

been rasping down the high spots, I left plenty of wood to work with with my pencil lines so as not to make any thin areas. still way above target weight, but now need to go slow and follow what the tree has given me. should be getting her to bend soon. there are some drying cracks in the back that I will need to fill with CA glue before i start bending the bow. this was a large old tree, unfortunatly the loggers werent too kind to her and damaged a lot of the sapwood, this one is not bad just some scuffs which I can sand out.
