Swiss Longbow
« on: June 23, 2013, 03:54:16 pm »
Here's my first shot at an ELB. It's more of a medieval style yew bow, the belly is not quite as round and the sapwood was left on completely. I figured it should not matter much what the middle 60% of the bow are made from.

A little like these: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Altarpiece_of_St_Sebastian.jpg

It's made from a piece of yew with thick rings, a little deflex but no branches and flaws otherwise. Very nice piece of wood that split from the log almost as a finished bow, I had to cut off very little.

85#@28", 78" ntn, a little under 30 ounces.

I feel I could even pull it to 30", if I could, that means  :P you can see on my face I'm struggling to get it to maybe 27...

Very nice bow!! I think you could easily pull it to 30". It certainly has the length.

Yup nice bow.
the longer draw is technique as well as strength. If you draw with you hand and elbow much higher level with your eye, you can then bring your elbow down like a lever to get that last couple of inches.
A bit how one of these over centre catches comes over and down.

Thats about how I have to draw every bow I make, seeing as I am all of probably 3 feet tall or so. It works though, doing it that way just came naturally after lots of practice.

the part that has too little is increased."

Thanks, I'll try that these days. I really feel I hit a wall with this one around where I have it in the pic. The tips are cowhorn, from one of these: http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,40572.0.html

very nice bow, these style longbows are becoming my favorite for how simple but effective they are. if you start training i bet you could get that 30" easily, plus the weight will be higher there....

I have a love of warbows, longbows, and any other simple, yet startlingly effective device.

Beautiful! Love the nocks as well.  What's the cast like with that much sapwood at the tips?

Nice!! ;)
