massive roadkill snake
« on: June 18, 2013, 11:51:49 am »
On my way home from work this morning and something on the side of the road caught my eye.  I saw how big it was and thought no way was it a native snake.  I did a U-turn and went back to pick it up.  It was a massive Black Rat Snake.  Its the biggest one I have ever seen.  And it has a nice pattern.  There is some damage on the head and tail but the body is untouched.

It is 6'2".

I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

My stepson picked up one for me the other day just a tad under 6ft. I wonder how old they are at that size?

I was wondering the same thing.

I got it skinned and scraped clean.  I had to extend my snake drying board.  First time I've had to do that.  This makes the 4th roadkill I've picked up in the last week.

The belly scales are almost 2" wide!  This is probably the biggest native snake I'll ever see in Indiana.

3-5' are common around here. I've seen a few 6' but much more rare. Wikipedia says they can make it to 7'

It amazing you can have 6' of snake and only the head area damaged. lucky.

3'-5' are what I usually find with the occasional bigger one hear and there but nothing close to this guy.  It was so much thicker than what I normally find.  I thought maybe it had just had a good meal but its stomach was empty.

Those things must have really been out the last couple of days. Yesterday morning I was on the Natchez Trace headed to a meeting and saw one in the middle of the oncoming lane. He looked in really good shape, but I was late and could not stop. I saw him on the way back through, but by then he was a pancake. Later in the day my son called me and had found a small one on the road and I saw 2 more that had been run over before the end of the day. They were all black snakes. I didn't see them close enough to know exactly what kind though.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
