Old Osage Billets...(pics added) (Full draw)
« on: June 08, 2013, 04:33:13 pm »
I was wondering around a local flea market today and found some OLLDDD Osage billets. One set is glued and spliced up and another already has the splice cut in.The glued up set has a old painted on makers make(SA).Both sets are chased to a ring and red brown.(Seasoned)An elderly lady was trying to sell them and thought they were cherry..They are most deffinatly well seasoned Osage..I know back in the early 1900"s before fiberglass,  companies used to market finished Osage and Yew bows, But I've never seen or heard of them being offered as a do it yourself kinda deal..She wanted 15 bucks a set..I wanted to get some info before I bought them..I doubt anyone else will jump on them..

I'll give you $15.95 a set for them unseen....shipped.  ;D   If they are really osage and decent sets of billets and glue-up they would easily be worth $15 per set.  I know you could buy bow staves back in the old days and would imaging billets also. Did the woman not know more about their history?

I went back and got them..The lady thought they were for making pool cues..I gave her 50 for them..They were her late husbands...They were in the attic of his woodworking shop..She said he had never shot archery that she could remember...Then again she was 93..so who knows..They are definitely Osage..I already glued the billets up with Epoxy..Surprisingly the fit was still decent even after so many years...

Did you sand or plane the surfaces first? Else I will be ROFLMAO when it blows up in the handle.

Nice score.  Old osage is the best osage!

Oh Squirrell...I was wondering how you would go about "Planing" a splice joint...I did sand it so both joints fit really well...I did use a gap filling glue tho...This wasn't my first splice job.....
