Some of my recent knapping...and (point ID help needed)
« on: May 20, 2013, 05:23:33 pm »
Here is some of my knapping done over the last few weeks. The point on the bottom is just under 2" in length. I found in near Canyon De Chelly in northern AZ when I was a teenager. It was laying directly below a cliff dwelling in the middle of nowhere. It appears the sides of the base have been ground, and there is no fluting. As you can see there is some pretty detailed serrations still on it. Anybody have any idea what kind of point this could be, and who made it ?

Thanks !

Because it was found in Northern Arizona, and also because of the serrations,  I would say Bajada point.  It's a Late Archaic atlatl dart point about 5000 to 6000 years old.  It looks to be in perfect condition.  A collector might pay $150 for it.

It's not a "paleo" point because the base is relatively narrow and slightly contracting.  Earlier versions of this point are called "Escobas" and the bases were ground well into Archaic times.  It also looks fairly thin, a characteristic of Late Archaic points of this design.

Bajada points were most likely made by ancestors of the Anasazi (Archaic - Basketmaker Era) while they were still primarily deer, antelope, and bighorn sheep hunters, long before the "Pueblo" peoples and before the Navaho moved in.

Edit:  Looks like it also has characteristics of San Jose points as well.  Hybrids of these types are possible.

Thanks a lot Jackrafty I appreciate the help. I will have to look into the two styles you described and research it some more. When I fiirst saw it I was thinking Dalton but the base just didnt seem right. Maybe one day I will find a point considered paleo !

Thanks BP I appreciate it. Parnell thanks for the Hickory Ipe blanks I will glue them up as soon as I get a form built. The point below I made from that "ledge" we found. For raw uncooked rock it knapps well although a little tough for pressure, you really gotta put some weight into it ! Sure makes for a nice sharp point and I like the color !

Also, your more than welcome on the blanks.  Thanks for buying me lunch.  That was the first thing I'd eaten on Saturday, which was stupid of me.  I pulled off on my way home and figured I'd better snooze for awhile. ;D
