Youth flatbow
« on: May 08, 2013, 06:16:51 pm »
A friend asked me to make his 11 year old son a bow.  I had a discarded 69" oak stave at floor tiller that I used for heat treat experiments and that came out way too noodly.  I chopped off 10" and made what feels like a 20+ lbs. @24" flatbow.  My friend already  wants two more for his daughters so if this is too light for the son then I'll make him another.
I stained the back a different color but, oddly, the one coat of tru oil took some of the back stain off the next day....?  Still looks ok.  It actually shoots good with 500 grn arrows.  The grip is a woman's purse material that feels like vinyl, on sued.  Shelf is tied on the outside.  As usual, my tiller is off but I opted for the imbalance over lightening the bow any further.  Feels good during shooting............

Nice work buddy.  That looks like a killer little bow to me!
"The bow is the old first lyre,
the mono chord, the initial rune of fine art
The humanities grew out from archery as a flower from a seed
No sooner did the soft, sweet note of the bow-string charm the ear of genius than music was born, and from music came poetry and painting and..." Maurice Thompso

Your eyes must be better than mine.  I don't really see where the tiller is off.  Maybe just a bit stouter on the bottom limb, ...but I assumed you'd meant to do that!

I'm certain it will be loved by the recipiant!

Coming from you all I feel alot better about the tiller.   I think Weylin's bow to Dan K. is about the nicest osage bow I've ever seen and Ryoon's hickory pyramids are legandary in my book.
I love oak, for some reason, and have recently aquired a bunch of straight and snakey staves.  So I'm looking forward to making a scaled=up version of this bow for myself someday.

I'm working on some kids bows for my grandchildren, but they're not as nice as that one!  Real nice job on the finish and handle.

Great looking little bow.
That handle is lovely, is it leather? Also what finish did you use? Been looking for a colour like that for white bows for a while.

Looks great . Tiller isn't off one bit . But it may after being worked in or exposed to humidity . Im thinking 25 - 35 pounds is plenty for an 11 - 12 year old dude !!
Keep calm , and camoflauge into mud
