Signing your bows

What do you all use to sign your bows?  Also, when do you sign them, before or after you finish them?  I finished a few recently, then tried signing them with a fine tip sharpie, no go, it just smeared even after a few hours to dry.

Has to be permanent marker, and has to be compatible with the finish you use over top. The ones that say they can be used on almost anything seem to work well.

I've used a regular wooden pencil then you can erase If you screw up and don't have to sand then once you put your finish on top of the pencil it will stay there

Ain't personally tried it yet Ksnow, but I have read on here that Indian ink works well. It comes in an ink bottle or fine tip pen and can be had at the craft store. If memory serves,you sign before you put your finish on. Hope this helps.

Might wait till someone else chimes in just in case my memory is wrong.

India ink works real well. I usually put on a few coats of tru oil or "whatever finish you plan to use" and then sign the bow and finish off with a few more coats of tru oil.

Thanks guys.  I use tru-oil, and the sharpie did not work at all.   I think I will give the india ink a shot.  Otherwise these will just be anonymous bows.

What I do when using regular sharpies,  spray on a clear coat of polyurethane and it won't smudge...

I use a woodburning tool. Works on all finishes, and quite permanent, though you can scrape it off pretty easy if you mess up.

I always use a fine tip sharpie over tru oil with a couple coats of oil over the signature.

I finish my bows with spar urethane. Use a Sharpie to sign and then brush on a coat of polyacrylic over my gibberish. The spar dissolves the Sharpie so I can't spray on any over the ink. Jawge

put a couple of coats of finish on, let it dry good, sign it let it dry paint pen sharpie ink whatever it has to dry, then I put two coats of waterbased sealer on the writing, then more of the usual finish you use, the toluene in most finishes dissolve the writing

I use an industrial sharpie pen over Tru-Oil.
