Whats missing in these pics of osage?
« on: May 06, 2013, 07:28:20 pm »
Clint gave me a 5" osage log that he cut. It was dead standing for a good while, maybe he can enlighten us as to how long. Anywho I brought it outside HOPING to get two halves, instead I got four beautiful quarters of delicious yellow love. Have a look at the pics, and in all seriousness, guess whats missing. Clint, Chris and Pat ya' cant guess!

Dang! You got it buddy. How is that? Never seen it before, or heard mention of it.

It happens with walnut sometimes too.  I think the resins leach out into the sapwood when its root system is still intact and pulling water, but the tree is dead.  Just speculation, but its the best guess I have.  Josh

I think Josh is on to something.  If I cut dead fallen stuff it has sapwood but the few dead standing trees I have cut didn't have any sapwood.  Glad you were able to get 4 pieces from it.
