Perfect way to strip bark from a Crepe Myrtle Stave!
« on: May 01, 2013, 01:31:58 am »
So I have recently acquired some more crepe myrtle staves and just as i was stripping them down with a little knife and razor blade i thought, "well this bark seems almost like a potato skin." I ran in the house, grabbed my moms potato peeler and went to town. (she doesn't know i took it  ;) )It was beautiful. The peeler worked so well. I wonder if it would work with other trees that have a similar bark? Just thought I would share this with you all since I haven't been posting so much due to being busy with school.

I hope i've given someone out there a new way to strip CM bark. Maybe i'm even late on this and someone has already mentioned this.

Be sure to clean the bark and gunk out of the peeler before it dries or it will be a pain next time you go to use it. Works great on red osier shafts as well.

Does your Mom know you have her potato peeler? If she finds out what you're using it for, she's gonna remove your gonads!!  ;) :o 8)

If she discovers the misused potato peeler, ...appeal to her in the name of her future grandchildren, and she may choose a less sterilizing response!

BTW - a new potato peeler costs about $2.50 for a NICE one.  It might be worth a walk thru the Wal-Mart...

haha, It's in the sink for her to clean :). She'll just think I was peeling potatoes like a nice child.

I'm doubt it would do well. The bark is soft. The wood is not. However I've never tried it so it could be great. I do know that I'm not stealing my wifes to find out. I value my gonads.

Blades on the peelers are probably way too weak to strip actual wood. It's possible, maybe i'll risk it and try (;

Well you mine as well use a hand plane which would work kind of like it the peeler wouldn't prove to be durable on wood compared to bark
