Arrow straightening stick tool
« on: March 25, 2013, 01:08:21 pm »
I made this arrow straightening tool based off of Patrick's YouTube video (allergichobbit).  It really works fantastic.  I picked up a number of other tips as well such as:
  • Only heat the side of the wood that you are bending towards
  • Sticks with gradual curves are much easier to work with.  some will never make arrows
  • You don't have to complete the arrow in one sitting.  And sometimes you can't.
  • Overheating the wood is bad

I'm sure I could think of plenty more I was doing wrong if I tried.  I took a batch of sticks and decided that I would approach them with the goal of learning.  It's been a lot of fun and it is definitely something that you improve on over time.  My goal is to make arrows from the areas I hunt and successfully hunt with them.
Thanks,

BTW is you want to make it just get a stick and a 1/2 inch drill bit.  The rest is pretty self explanatory.   ;)

Cool, I might have to build one! Thanks for the instructions too.

You've discovered an old tool used for centuries.  Watch this guy straighten bamboo for arrows (there are three vids - this is the first).

note the tool he is using (it's double ended ).  He also does half the cane at a time by 'pulling' along the cane.

I have all sorts and kinds different toos for different leath curves and kinks. It's harder to get by with one size straighter. One thing for sure is round off those sharp edges. They'll put dents in your shafts every time.
