Finally repaired Grampie's old bow

Hey everyone,

I have an old FG longbow that my grandfather hunted with.  It's starting to delaminate at the tips and I want to get it fixed sooner rather than later, for sentimental reasons.

Can anyone recommend a Bowyer in the Northeast that is reputable, will take a look and see if it can ever shoot again?

That's the extent of it.  The gel coat is just starting t bubble in other areas, but I'm not worried about that.

If not too bad a little super glue might just fix it for you. Will you post pics?

Epoxy will do it. Glue and lighty clamp. Let it fully cure befor shooting.

  That's  nothing!  gorilla impact glue!   it's a super glue I use it to glue limb tips on fg bows good stuff  I breathe on it like you are about to clean your glasses  CA type glues  are water activated go for it   good luck JeffW

I finally got some time to glue it up.

It didn't take...  All of the pressure from my clamp was on the middle and didn't do much for the "ears".  I will need to figure out how to use some vice grips to clamp it where it needs it.

Try again, maybe tonight, maybe when I get back from Mexico next weekend.

Had it happen to me I just glued it back down with tite bond 2 still shoots fine

Wax is often recommended for a final finish over Gelcoat.  If wax has crept in and facilitated the delamination, any amount of glue will NOT fix it.  Glue will not stick to wax.  Before you go any further I recommend you determine exactly why the wood lams are separating.  If you can't figure it out, then it's best to find a good bowyer like you mentioned.

Hopefully the glue you used is a good base for more glue.  If it's not, then the glue will have to be removed before the repair can be done.

I would fill it full of a gel loctite super glue, then use wax paper over a board, and clamp it down, using the board for evenly applied pressure and the wax paper to keep from gluing your board to to the bow.

Pekane - I've looked at the pics quite a few times now, and I'm not sure that is FG backing. I believe it is Fortisan - used quite a bit pre - FG. I have an OLD Lemonwood Longbow that is a BRUTE, that was backed with Fortisan. The backing started to delam and I tried many differant glues to lay the backing down with no sucsess (It was a wall hanger). The backing eventually totally fell off. Good luck - Bob.

Guys, the belly lam is the one delaminating, no?  I assume we are looking at a recurve.  Look at the way the string notch is cut...

clean it well, good ca glue and innertube wrap it as the clamp
