Multiple backing layers?
« on: March 05, 2013, 02:00:53 am »
I've got a red oak board bow in the works, but I don't fully trust the grain. I trust the grain so little, actually, that I was thinking of using multiple layers of cloth to back it. Has anybody tried this? It's going to be about #50 and 1.5" wide, so barring horrific tillering, it will should survive. I just want to have the option to make it much shorter than may normally be prudent. Any input?

Short answer yes. There is a thread about clothe backing right now.

I'm fairly new here but I have had a couple of successes with double layers of silk fabric.

In my experience, one layer of silk does no good at all. It takes several, and I have two broken bows to show that one layer does no good.
