building up handles

when you build up a handle with leather say .5 inches dose it have a noticeable effect on the tiller

You would have to glue it down  and saturate it with some pretty solid glue that gave it some bend resistance.

Leather is very flexible and shouldn't won't the tiller. You should be able to put it on the back, the belly or both with no problems.

I use leather to fill out the back of the handles on most of my bows and sometimes I use it for the handle riser on brendy handle bows. I've done it for years and never noticed any adverse effects.

What about rawhide to build up a handle?

Rawhide should work fine too but I've never tried it. It will bend with the bow so it won't pop off like wood will if the handle area bends.

Neither rawhide or leather will affect the tiller.

the bow's handle is on the stiffer side of bend in the handles, I just wanted to make sure I don't need to take off a few scrapes before applying the leather.
