"Simply-Yew" a new yew hunting bow-elb style
« on: October 16, 2007, 09:03:15 pm »
Hey guys, Been very busy at work and have not had any time in the shop!

I just finished this one up on sunday and would like to share it with you all.

I wanted a new hunting bow. Shooting the Achumawi short indian bow did not work this year. Not enogh time to practice. Short bows like that need lots of practice.

A nice simple long bow was in order.

this is the bow that i made for Mi deer.

Yew chased sap wood to 1/4"
68" tip to tip
60#@31"
Heated 2" of reflex into the stave am left with about 1/2" just unstrung. Not bad for a bow I am drawing 32"!!

Unbraced:

Braced:

Given the stark white of yew sap wood I decided to add some coloring in for camo. I used fire to lightly toast the back in spots. Primitice camo:

Not wanting to do horn nocks or overlays. This bow is all about simplicity. So i opted for the simpilistic nocks possiable....

No Nocks:

Here she is at full draw:

Arrow is 33" bop. The bow is drawn to 31".

Very quiet, no hand shock and pretty quick.

She will be a great hunting bow.

Thanks for looking,

SJM

Thanks guys, She is a great bow. I think when all is said and done she will have maybe 1" of set. That will give the arrows a nice send off.

A couple of things worth mentioning that I forgot in the original post. This bow is built on a Mary Rose war bow plat form. Meaning true D cross section and a 5:6 ratio. Finished with True Oil and buffed down to get ri of the sheen. The string is 8 ply linen. No timber hitches. Same style of knot on bot ends. Brace with the knee.

It is chased to one ring by the way. For at least 90% of the back.

You did a great job on that bow. The tiller looks right on. I would hot have thought to temper the back, but it looks like it didn't hurt a thing - I learn something everytime I come to this site.
