Hey guys! I have a source for a large amount of river cane. I harvested 5 dozen shafts in about 30 minutes and didnt make a dent in it. I would love to trade some raw cane shafts for some feathers, snake skins, or a handmade knife (or just about anything else). I also have a bearskin (black bear, partial rug)to trade if anyone is needing it.

I would also be interested in the cane. I've got feathers, beeswax, sinew, and some leather (deer, buffalo, and some elk hide plus some med weight cow hide from an old set of chaps)

Hey guys, can anyone give me some pointers on the cheapest way to ship some of this cane? Looking on USPS website, looks like a fortune!

The cheapest way is to have your customers pay for shipping.
Seriously.

No cheap way but I'll try to get a picture posted. Light cardboard wrapped around the shafts seems to be the most economical. Bundle the shafts wrapped with a couple rubber bands and then wrap them tightly in the cardboard. Priority mail will probably only be a fraction more than parcel post and less chance of damage. When trading for other goods the shipping costs need to be considered as part of the value.
In other words if you're trading for feathers you've got to figure the shipping cost as part of the trade.
Probably wont cost much more to send 2 dozen than 1 dozen. You should probably figure $7 to $10 which amounts to about .60 to .75 per shaft. Free shafts aren't free especially if you have to for shipping.
Trim the extra cardboard to just give you a double wrap and fold the ends over and securely tape them down.

Several wraps of Saran Wrap will suffice for a bundle.
