finished bighorn sheep bow.
« on: November 11, 2012, 09:19:30 pm »
2nd completed bighorn bow. This one is almost 35" tip to tip and has a draw of 52-56# @ 21". 4.5" non bending handle.  I used a shorter lap splice this time, about 1" with no rivets, so used 4.5" horn strips on the belly and back that have 2 horn rivets. Also glued and sinew wrapped. Been shooting it almost 2 months and the tiller has stopped changing. It is true when using horn with sinew that is about the same thickness as the horn, you need to give it some time to season. At least 3 months before stringing, better to go 6. You can shoot one a couple weeks or less, but you will constantly be tweaking the tiller for months. I have never had any problem shooting a wood bow after 2 weeks with 2-4 layers of sinew, but horn is not the same. Thats why Turks waited a year or so. 6 layers of elk sinew on this one, 7 in the middle. Used horns from 1 desert bighorn and 1 rocky mt. The horns came from the same side, so when the twist started to come back from memory they offset each other and the string still lines up center. These horns were only 23". If you can find longer horns you can cut a more strait strip and not have to worry as much about the twist.
Saw someone posted a horn sinew build along and thought this might help.

Very cool!  Love the beaded bow case and quiver as well.  Did you do that?

Thanks, 6 layers of sinew with 7 in the middle. The quiver is a copy of an old Ute quiver in the Peabody museum, all sinew sewn on brain tan bison. I'll shoot it through my chrono at full draw. So far I have found a well made sinew backed short bow or osage self bow shoots about as fast. Think the weight of the horn sinew mix slows it a bit.

Amazing job.Tribute to the patience it takes to accomplish.Hard to believe there's 54 or so pounds from that little bow.Unbelievable bend.I would say you know them sheep horns by now.Love to sit down sometime and talk with you about it.
