Huge Python Skin for trade
« on: October 30, 2012, 05:59:58 pm »
I have a huge West African Python skin that I'm sure others could much more with then I.

It's about 103-107" long if you stretch it a bit, over a foot wide in the middle (the orange ruler is a foot) so I'm sure you could get a lot of bows out of it!

I'd really love a bow since I'm trying to get back into archery and would like to go bow hunting next season, I love reflex/deflexes since I have no skill at making something like that, they just amaze me, something around 50-55#, I have no idea what a skin like this is worth to anyone but if I am asking to much please let me know!

I know I haven't been around long so please fell free to email to chat it up a bit if you like!

Actually I don't believe it is tanned, it is soft and playable though

That looks tanned.  Amazing how thick their hides get, but then I am used to skinning 24" prairie rattlers, not 8 ft long deer swallowers!
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Yes it's pretty thick.  I would imagine it would make a nice backing.  I didn't tan it, though maybe it is, has no smell what so ever.  Very plyable and I didn't see any holes except for the ones used for pining to dry it.

I have to agree with JW, it's tanned. It would be stiff as rawhide if it wasn't.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

The tanning chemicals can make it hard to glue down.

And the pithyness would make it hard to seal... I think bow backing would be out for me, but I can think of a lot of other things I could do with it. How big a hurry are you in? I might be able to put one together, if you have time to wait a little.

Not in a hurry at all, I've learned already being in a hurry with bow making isn't a good combo.  ;D

Heck yes it would!
"The way of heaven is like the bending of a bow-
the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."
