Osage Tiller Help
« on: October 10, 2012, 09:40:00 pm »
I just got this Osage stave and it's  got  some reflex to it. I've got it roughed out and bending but I'm not quit sure how a bow with reflex ought to look  when properly tillered. I am thinking that on the left limb I need to take off more wood towards the tip. Please help!

My understanding is that a bow with even, bow length reflex should look just like a normal bow with the same design. It is just going to have higher weight up front because of the reflex but its tiller at 15" should look the same as a bow without reflex at 15", it will just take more weight to get it there. Someone please correct me if I am off base.

Just be cautious taking wood off the outer third of the limbs when you still have a long string on there.  It looks like you are ready to move to a shorter string.  Do that and then see what looks a little stiff.

If I had violated  a ring on the back would it have broken already?

Tiller looks pretty even to me. Looks just fine. You're definitely ready for the short string.

Maybe maybe not on the violated back, you should be able to see if you have done that.Looking pretty good, like others have said looks ready for a short string to me. Looks a little stiff mid 1/3 of both limbs,be careful to stay off the fad area
till you get the rest bending even,it will want to bend there first so get the rest bending and the work toward the fads. :)

Agree with pappy, stay off the fades.  I get one bending near or in the handle last.  Way too easy to come in under weight trying to round out the bend if you start near the handle.  Get a short string on one as soon as you safely can.  Back violations can range from inconsequential to fatal.  If you fear that you have a problem, show some pics.

Last picture tiller looks darn good to my eye Victor. How far to you have it drawn to on that tiller stick and what is the bows length?

That bad boy is at a full draw of  28" . It's 68" tip to tip but I will probably take an inch off it.

Tiller Looks darn good! Might just be the way the light is hitting it but the left limb in the last pics looks a tiny bit stiff in the first 1/3 just off the fade to point of almost being a slight hinge there at the fade. a few strokes in the stiff area might relieve the hingy look right there.

Very nice. You did a good job. If you look closely at the limb entry points into the handle they are different by a little bit which makes for a tougher tiller. Nice job. Jawge
