jasper points for Bama
« on: October 03, 2012, 11:12:41 pm »
Although not final sharpened yet, these are the Jasper points I will be hunting with in Alabama in a couple weeks. This Jasper is native to north central AL and after heat treating the colors change to yellows, oranges and reds. They are knapped using only antler tools in the Traditional, notch-less "Hamilton" style found in the area. roughly 1" wide mounted in Bama native rivercane

Thanks guys, I've whooped a couple deer with similar points before, just never of the jasper variety!  Roger I used an extremely primtive blend of devcon  >:D     I have to send them through the mail service and i know those clowns would bust my pine pitch glue loose.  i dont want any repairs on my vacation...so i opted to cheat..lol surprisingly tho its not much stronger than pitch, a little more vibration proof, but i'd say my biggest reason is- I'm using pretty colored points and hate to blacken them up with pitch and carbon from flame.

Ill be hunting at my friend Dax's place. He lives in...Jasper, AL ..  but most of our hunting will be closer to Winfield.  unfortunately I could only squeeze in a long weekend hunt. I really enjoy it up there

That is less that 100 miles from the house.
If there is any of that Jasper Rock around...  Pick up some more.

I have been wanting to make a trade for some good hunting points.
It would be nice to have some from "Local" rock.
If you cant fine any "wild" rocks look for some "tame" ones in landscapping around hotels and restruants. ;D

they seem to be quite common in all the creek beds with cobbles that I have seen.  finding ones of a decent size seems to be the tough part. I plan on spalling a bunch out in an afternoon and mailing a box home

Those look great, Ryan!  I live in Fultondale just a few miles from Jasper.  My buddy Erik is the flintknapper but I have been several times with him hunting for knappable materials.  Everything we find around north/central alabama crumbles into dice squares when you try to knap it.  I wish we could come across some nice material like that. :)

you guys are making me feel real fortunate to be finding this.  all the points and flakes we find in the local field are heat treated jasper...that is what got me looking around.

Those "red" points about made the Archeology guys go nuts.  They could not figure where all that red rock came from.  Then they figured out that they were heat treated jasper. ;D

Send home a BIG box of spalls.
