Simple Seagrape Bow

Here is a quick,(a relative term) bow I made from a stave of Seagrape I got from Parnell at the Classic (thanks Steve.) He said that , as far as he knows, just him and I are the only ones who have worked this wood....Cool!!!
 
  The wood itself is.....different. It has no discernible growth rings and works well with hand tools. It is light weight(the bow only weighs 14 oz.), but be careful cutting it out because it will trick you on how thick it needs to be. Despite its massive appearance, it only pulls  50#. It seems to be quite elastic, almost fells like drawing a sinewed bow. It also heat bends well.

  Specs:  60" ntn. 50# @ 28", 1.5" at widest point, .5" @ tips. Stands straight at rest.

 This bow has very good performance and is very quiet.

Awesome bow!  I never heard of seagrape....  Where does it come from?  Looks like you made a fine bow out of it.   ;)

Thanks. Seagrape grows in Florida, on the coast I believe. I am not sure if they are a protected species or not. Maybe Parnell can chime in and help us out.

YES!  Great work Cody!  Thank you for doing that stave right, it looks like you've got it working properly!  I've got another in the works that shouldn't be too far behind.

Sea Grape is protected when it is natively used for a beach brake.  It grows all over Florida by the water and found just behind the grasses and initial dune area.  The pieces I'd cut were landscaped pieces, though.  They were growing into the roof of an abandoned house so I'd cut it to be a good sumaritan!They'd been growing staight right up next to the house.  By the beach it gets all gnarly.

It's used here in S. Florida frequently to line the fences of the supersized gated neighborhoods that this area is so well known for. ::)

Just did some reasearch I think there might be many of these in NC to I visit kure beach often and lots of knarly trees around the dunes buy thouse might also be live oaks not sure.  But did find where people make wine and jelly from them.  pretty cool and very nice bow simple a sweet the way I like them.
