Osage and Copperheads
« on: September 05, 2012, 04:36:44 am »
This is a bow I made a few months back. I waited to post it until after I skinned it. I waited to skin it until I had shot a couple thousand arrows thru it and I was sure it was worthy of the only two real  nice copperhead skins I had. I did'nt want to waste them on just any bow. I wanted them to go on a bow I knew I would use alot and would last a long time.
I harvested the wood  near the Shoo fly creek in southern Sumner county Kansas, about 3 yrs ago.
The skins were harvested very near my house by two different neighbors that know I am always on the lookout for nice copperhead skins.
The tools used were chainsaw, sledge and wedge, drawknife, bowyers rasp, cabinet scrapper, chainsaw file and sandpaper. The finish is 5 coats of tru oil. The skins are glued on with TBII.
The dimensions are 52#@27". It is 60" tip to tip. approx 1 3/8" at the fades with a taper to the tips that are a little less than 3/8" at the shoulders of the nocks. The tips are very mildly flipped with zebra wood overlays.
Although it has around 3/4" of set when unstrung, its well balanced in the hand. It shoots smooth and really spits an arrow. I'm pleased to share it with you all and hope you like it.  Danny

Not much handshock just a gentle little bump .Outer third is minimal mass. Its a dandy to shoot. Whisper quiet and plenty fast. It will definitely be my hunting bow this season.  Danny

Very nice Danny. The ultimate combo of wood and skins IMO.

Beautiful bow.  Did you split the two skins and apply them in halves?  That looks cool.

I've had one copperhead for about three years and am still looking for another, apparently not hard enough!

Nice job, SW. That combination is purdy for sure. Sweet bend, too!! :)

Thanks fellas. I have been wanting to get around to posting it for a month or two but just so little time so much to do.

Tom Sawyer....those are two skins. One I've had for about 3yrs and the other we finally got about 4mths ago. They grow big around here. Theres more where that came from. Its just a littel hard getting neighbors trained on how to properly kill one without them blasting it to smitherins or beating it to a pulp.
Everybody knows I like skins now so its just a matter of if what they bring me is still usable for bow limbs. I've told everybody here to leave the little ones alone. Let em grow up to be bow skins I say.  Danny
