55" Black Walnut Character Bow
« on: June 30, 2012, 05:36:11 pm »
Took what nature gave me here, 55" top of a walnut sapling. Cut the 4" dia. tree for stave splits from the bottom half but also took this piece that was the tree top and made this. Black walnut all sapwood, crude deer antler tip overlays, sinew wrapped area where small sliver lifted on back of lower limb, dyed wood with acrylic paint accents. Handle wrap of dyed deer skin from my first selfbow killed buck 12 yrs. ago. One deer skin has made handle wraps for about 40 bows so far and still some left. Thanks for looking everyone.

I like that little shorty!  I have been wanting to try black walnut, but haven't found one yet.  How is it to work with?  It must be tension strong to have given you such an excellent bend.  Really nice bow.

Nice! Love your style BB.  Love the finish. You had me fooled with the dots...thought they were little knots...nice touch.
What's the weight on that thing?

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Sorry forgot to list the specs, around 54# @ 25" where it hits a wall. Thats my typical draw length though so it works for me.
Howard, i have made 5 now from black walnut and think it is fairly easy to work. I think wide may be best for this wood, it will take a fair amount of set and seems like density can vary from one tree to another.

Very nice bow! i love your rugged looking finish.  This question might have nothing to do with you, but you look really familiar.. Were you at the Letchworth knapin last summer?  ??? ???

Thanks again guys. Jon i've never been to a knapin but would like to attend one someday to learn some basic knapping skills, its something I would love to be able to do. Looks like it would be much more challenging than working with wood though.
