1st 3-d. . . the wall o shame.

Well I did my first 3-d shoot today. 

Was up last night making a btch of new arrows 98% of which were sacrificed to the woods Gods.  When I got down to two arrows I realized that I should shoot the same arrow till I loose/break it.  I started improving!  Oh and I switched to the kids distance. 

what I learned. 
1)Wear boots.  It's a mucky mess back there if it has recently rained.
2)Shoot the same arrow till you loose it.
3)Practice with your arrows some before going (yea I went with a new bow and new arrows).
4) Don't misplace the shooting tab... dry shooting that much hurts.

Score was all over the place.  Safest place for any wild animal for me is at about 20yds broadside.

Impressive misses:  Bison, Standing bear, Elk.
Impressive Hits: Skunk, Gator, Mosquito, Havelina.
Most common hit, gut shot - 5 except the Hayenna who took it in the noggin.

Was hoping for a Turkey shot but didn't get it.  Killed the Dino.  That was kinda cool.

Injury: Broken knock slapped the arm and left a wicked bruise.  Pretty sure if it wasn't a boo arrow I'd be in the ER right now with a shaft in my arm.

LOL, been there done that.  Wish there were more around here.  Byron invites me every time and so far there's always a conflict.  :'(  I love 3D shooting.

Sounds like a perfectly normal 3d day to me! Thats why we do it. If it where easy it wouldnt be fun.

what was your score and how many targets were there?  I have only been shooting 3D events for 2 years but I try to go to all that are available in my area.  My first few shoots I don't think I even broke 100 points.  Lost around 50 arrows too LOL.  Just an excuse to make more I guess. :) :)

40 targets.  On the 2nd part of the course I switched to the kiddy distance which was only 5' infront of the primitive distance but it saved my arrows and I was able to finish the course. 
Scoring is 12-10-8-5-0.

The main thing is that you went out and had some fun ( I hope).  The next time you go to a scoring 3-d shoot don't concern yourself about your score.  Just try to work on improving your shooting/accuracy and having fun.

While I agree that 3d's should be shot for fun, the score does give a pretty accurate read-out of our distance limits.  For me, that is a huge motivator to practice.  Sadly, they don't do 3d's nearly as much down here in Texas and my practicing has slipped a lot after moving into a development.  I will say this, the most fun I've ever had shooting was at 3d's was when a group of us walked the course after everybody else was done and made up shots.  That was flat-out awesome.  I miss the old club and it's outdoor range.

Don't be too hard on yourself PB, it will get better and better.  You will see unbelievable things at 3d's.  I once took a shot with about a 2" window between saplings just before the target.  The heavy douglas fir shaft caught the tree on the left and flew to pieces.  When I got up to  the coyote it had 3 different sections of arrow stuck in it.  I lobbied to add the 3 scores together, but they made me take the score of the piece with the point.  Thankfully it was an 8. :)

Heck no! If I bring in 4 arrows and step out with four arrows it was a success. Really bad shots usually dont let you find them!
