Can anyone tell me what type of wood this is?
« on: May 28, 2012, 03:22:53 am »
I found a tree today that I am unfamiliar with and was wondering of anyone could help me out and tell me if it is a decent bow wood.

Could be a species of hawthore (Crataegus). But the pictures are very vague...the leaves can hardly be identified. Try to upload a better pic (better camera?) if possible.

I agree with DS, hawthorn. A better pic would help. Hawthorns should have small fruit now and that might help ID.  A pic of the overall tree would help also.

Try to zoom out with your camera lens and just put the camera closer to the targets. The wider the lens remains, the more light it captures and the better quality picture, or so I've been told. I'm no camera expert by any means but this seems to work with my cheapo camera.

I will get a better pic. It's not sassafras leaves are way smaller( hard to tell from pic I know). I did notice some thorns on the limbs, no fruit of any kind. If it is hawthorn, would it make a decent bow? Not familiar with it.

Looks like Hawthorn to me.  Yeah, it makes a great bow if you can find a decent piece.  Really dense stuff SG around 0.80, just a hair less dense than Osage. Generally its pretty gnarly, with lots of twists.  It also checks easily so dry it slow if possible.

Thanks for all the input guys. I found a piece that I think will work for what I need. Making a bow for my nephew. I'll try to post a few pics of it as I progress with the project. Thanks again.

Hawthorn makes great bows. The leaves are the same as English hawthorn but the bark is different...not that it counts for much!
