Stalking a Used Band Saw...

Hi Y'all,

I'm in the process of Stalking a Band Saw for my slow growing wood shop.

With that said I'm looking at a JET 710750 JWBS-18X 18-Inch 1-3/4-Horsepower Resaw Woodworking Bandsaw with Roller Guides, 115/230-Volt 1-Phase.
The current owner says it was bought from an estate, the original owner had bought it, set it up and only made a single cut before he was no longer able to work.
The saw is currently setup 110v.

Anybody have experience, good or bad, with this saw?
Anything I should be looking for in particular when looking over this unit?
I'm going to look the saw over Thursday evening.

Don't have anything to say about that particular saw but I've got a 14" JET, and I'm more than pleased with it.  They make great tools.

Sounds like a nice saw.  Give it a good once over.  Take a piece of scrap wood and try it out.  Make sure it runs smooth.  You might want to check the tires and make sure they are good.  Post some pics of it if you get it.

If money didnt limit me I would have jumped right past a 14" saw and went to big pig.

Thank You for the responses fells...

I spent some time reading around the net about this model.
The comments were pretty much gathered into two camps.

The Cons: Folks that couldn't get it set up and running right.
and
The Pros: Folks that had no problems with set up and tuning.

Either Way, I should know more about this particular Band Saw tomorrow evening. :)
I'm planning on taking a piece of Bodark with me to cut on.
And a buddy of mine that is an electrician, as a second set of eyes.

If it winds up at my house I'll definitely post pics.

Gus, I don't remember if you saw my Jet saw when you were in the shop.  It has cut a lot of osage over the 15 years or so I've had it.  It's also a 14" 1 hp saw.  I dropped it moving it from the garage to the shop and broke the table.  They were great to work with and I had a replacement in less than a week.  I like it. :)

Have you considered getting a riser block for your 14"er, Pearly?  It'll allow you a full 12 inches of clearance.

I have Jon. My biggest "want" isnt height. Its table size, blade capabilties, and horsepower. My 14" Grizzly works perfect for 95% of what I do. I like to split half logs of elm, hickory and HHB on it. Its not great for it, but I go sloooooow.

  Pearl, I know what you mean. I have the 14" delta. Happy with it overall but sometimes wished I just had a bigger saw with bigger blades and bigger motor.

You always find a need for a bigger saw >:D i have heard good things about jet i have a 2hp grizzly and it has been put to the test...when you get to the 10-12" logs you need to slow up a bit >:D hope this is is the one for you! And if so pics.pics.andmore pics.

Thank You for the info and discussion fellas...

Went to see the saw last night.
It does look nearly new.
A little light surface corrosion on some of the nuts and bolt heads from sitting, should clean up nicely.
The Tires looked and felt good.
Everything felt smooth and sounded good in operation.

It comes with the Miter Block and Fence.
Has a Tilt Table.
And weighs 400+ pounds.

Made the guy an offer.
He Accepted!
Pick her up Saturday.

Won't post picks till she's safe on the ground at Mi Casa!

Gus you will NEVER regret buying that big dog....never. You will never be left "wanting" in the bandsaw dept either. Congrats on your new purchase.

Got her home safe and sound this afternoon.
Did a bit of Puppy Proofing.
Still have to come up with a cover.
Should pick up the Rolling Base for it early next week so I can move it around easier.

Couldn't be more pleased at this point.
Ran some Osage and Texas Ebony through just for a look see and she didn't bat and eye.
