My first successful osage bow
« on: May 22, 2012, 12:30:13 pm »
Not able to find osage here in Oregon I bought one of Gary Davis' staves. So, it is not fully my work in that respect. I made this stave into a 64" ntn 52#@28". It has a positive tiller of 1/8" after shooting it several hundred times. It has about .5 string follow. At the fades it is 1.5" with .5" at the nocks. With the knots in this piece it was a challenge chasing a ring for this "newbie". But with all the info. on this site it made it much more achievable.  This is my first leather handle wrap....I need lots of work on this! haha I will take this one off and glue on an arrow rest then apply another wrap. But I was so eager to try a wrap and shoot it some more I just tried my hand it and have been shooting it off my hand. The right side is the upper limb.

You did good. Gary has some great bow wood, his bow blanks are second to none ;)

That may be your first osage bow but it surely ain't your first bow! Very nice!!!

the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

You're right, it is my 3rd bow. I made a hazelnut bow that was successful but not the right poundage. A lot of learning went on during that bow. Then I attempted to make an osage bow with another stave. It was not the right design for that piece of wood and I just didn't like the results...too low in poundage also. So with this one I seemed to have put a lot of things I learned on this site to use and I am happy with the results.  I truly thank everyone who contributes to this site and shares what they know. It has made it possible for me to do this.

Every time i shoot at a bunny i recall the wise words of Elmer Fudd "I've got you now you waskally wabbit!"

Snag, I like it!! Also like the design of the tips. Very clean looking.
I found many years ago that it is much easier and more rewarding working with those that don't know anything than those that know it all.

I've never worked a stave before, but I can appreciate beauty. I love the look of Osage. Great job! I wish this stuff grew in Saskatchewan. I've only ever seen it first hand growing in Oklahoma.
